March 29th Sermon Notes - Pastor Johnny Scott

The Road To Jerusalem Week #4

John 12:20–22
Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival.
21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request.
“Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.”

22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.

-3X Andrew connects people to Jesus
-Philip fumbled here
-Andrew knew what to do

Anytime the writer does something 3X, he’s saying something with the pattern

Patterns in John’s Gospel
How many “I Am” statements?
7 “I Am” Statements:
1. Bread of Life
2. Light of the World
3. Door
4. Good Shepherd
5. Resurrection and Life
6. Way, Truth, Life
7. True Vine
7 Signs (perfect number)

Patterns in John’s Gospel

Transition
If this is the 3rd (and culminating) bringing of someone,
we need to see the pattern John is showing in Andrew’s life.

1st Time — Family
John 1:40–42
Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him,
“We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).
42 And he brought him to Jesus.

Connect Your Family To Jesus
-This is the hardest place to start
-This is how the early church exploded

Transition — 2nd Time
2nd Time — The Overlooked

John 6:8–9
Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up,
9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish,
but how far will they go among so many?”
Connect People The World Overlooks To Jesus

Transition — 3rd Time
3rd Time — The Nations
He brings the nations… and Jesus responds:
John 12:23
Jesus answered them,
“The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.”

-One trigger for the cross is the global mission
-Jesus didn’t come just for the Jews
-He came for YOU — all people

Everyone sees the Triumphal Entry as a Jewish moment
John shows it as the Lamb presented to the nations

Connect The World To Jesus
The Pattern of Andrew
-Andrew starts by bringing one person
-Then he brings what little someone has
-Now he brings the world

Andrew never preached a sermon
He just kept bringing people to Jesus
You don’t have to fix people
You don’t have to convince people
Just bring people to Jesus

A Warning
John 12:42–43
Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.
But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith
for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;
43 for they loved human praise more than praise from God.

-Fear still stops many people
-What kind of fear?
→ What other people think

Transition
This text isn’t preached much.
Palm Sunday has so many big moments:
-Palms
-Donkey
…but not the BIGGEST moment

The Big Moment
The Greeks arrive
God speaks from heaven
This only happens 3 times in scripture (pattern again)
1. Baptism → Identity
“This is my Son…”
2. Transfiguration → Approval
3. HERE → The launch

John 12:27–33
“Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say?
‘Father, save me from this hour’?
No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.
28 Father, glorify your name!”
Then a voice came from heaven,
“I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.”
29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered;
others said an angel had spoken to him.
30 Jesus said,
“This voice was for your benefit, not mine.
31 Now is the time for judgment on this world;
now the prince of this world will be driven out.
32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth,
will draw all people to myself.”
33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.

-Some thought it was thunder
-Others thought it was an angel
People don’t always hear clearly
Are you today?

Closing
The road has led us here
-The King has entered the city
-The nations are knocking
-Heaven has spoken

And Jesus says:
“When I am lifted up…
I will draw all people to myself.”

Final Question
The question is not whether He is drawing
The question is:
Who are you bringing?
