Exodus Week 3 Sermon Notes - Pastor Johnny Scott

Identity: Who am I?
Uncertainty: Who are You?

These are your responses to:
God’s voice
And His answers back

Calling Moment — Excuse #3
“What if they don’t believe me?”

Exodus 4:1
Moses answered,
“What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say,
‘The Lord did not appear to you’?”

God’s Answer
3 signs
→ Not random
→ Targeted
→ Deeply personal

Sign #1 — Staff → Snake

Healing #1
Exodus 4:2–5
Then the Lord said to him,
“What is that in your hand?”
“A staff,” he replied.
3 The Lord said, “Throw it on the ground.”
Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it.
4 Then the Lord said to him,
“Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.”
So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand.
5 “This,” said the Lord,
“is so that they may believe that the Lord, the God of their fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has appeared to you.”

Staff / Snake
-Shepherd tool
-Ordinary
-Nothing special
-His main job tool

Egypt:
Snake = symbol of Pharaoh’s authority

God is saying:
“What you think is ordinary…
I can use to confront power.”

God didn’t ask Moses for something he didn’t have
He asked him to surrender what he did have

Miracles start with what is already in your hand

What’s in your hand?
-Your experience
-Your story
-Your voice
-Your pain

Sign #2 — Hand → Leprosy → Healed
Healing #2
Exodus 4:6–7
Then the Lord said,
“Put your hand inside your cloak.”
So Moses put his hand into his cloak, and when he took it out,
the skin was leprous—it had become as white as snow.
7 “Now put it back into your cloak,” he said.
So Moses put his hand back into his cloak,
and when he took it out, it was restored, like the rest of his flesh.

Hand / Leprosy
-Uncleanness
-Brokenness
-Rejection

Hand comes out diseased
→ (that’s how he feels)

Goes back in
→ healed

God shows Moses (and you):
Jesus Has Power Over What Is Broken In You
“God doesn’t just use what’s in your hand…
He redeems what’s in your life.”

“The thing you’re most insecure about…
may be the very thing God wants to use.”

Sign #3 — Nile → Blood
Healing #3
Exodus 4:8–9
Then the Lord said,
“If they do not believe you or pay attention to the first sign,
they may believe the second.
9 But if they do not believe these two signs or listen to you,
take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground.
The water you take from the river will become blood on the ground.”

Nile / Blood
-Egypt’s lifeline
-Source of prosperity
-Considered divine

God is showing:
I have authority over what you’re afraid of
Moses was afraid of Pharaoh…

God showed him—Pharaoh’s power is not ultimate

Instead of just:
“God equips you”

God answers your fear in 3 ways:
1. He uses what’s in your hand
“You already have more than you think.”
2. He heals what’s in your heart
“Your weakness is not a disqualifier—it’s a platform.”
3. He is greater than what’s in your way
“What you’re afraid of is not bigger than God.”

God Transforms
-What you have
-What you are
-What you face

“God didn’t give Moses something new—
He showed him something true.”

“Your limitation is often the stage for God’s power.”
“Stop asking God for more…
start surrendering what you already have.”

The same hand Moses doubted…
God used to split the Red Sea

“Moses thought the problem was his ability…
God showed him the real issue was his perspective”

“Eventually, our excuses stop being about ability…
and start being about who God is”

Moses is not the hero
God is

All of us are standing in front of our own burning bush moment
-A calling
-A step of faith
-A conversation
-A surrender
